Mother’s Day is every day for me

Breakfast tray idea for the “mom” in your life.

The first Hallmark card specifically designed for Mother's Day appeared in 1912. It was created by the founder of Hallmark Cards, Joyce Hall, and his brother Rollie Hall. They introduced a line of Mother's Day cards to offer a sentimental and meaningful way for people to express their love and appreciation for their mothers on the holiday.  But when did the first bagel appear on a breakfast tray for mom on Mother’s Day?

I can tell you that I have tender memories dating back to 1995 when my daughter Rebekah, at age 4, decided to bring me breakfast in bed.  Conspiring with her dear father, they woke at the crack of dawn (easy for her but not so much for him), and drove to the store for balloons, a card and bagels.  I woke to the clatter in the kitchen downstairs but feigned sleep when I heard the set of footsteps hurrying in my direction.  Rebekah and Miguel presented me with a beautiful tray complete with orange juice, bagel and cream cheese (probably Noah’s bagels at that time) and a bouquet of flowers.

My early birds planning ahead?

Looks like cereal and milk for Rebekah and Miguel.

Miguel and daughter Rebekah do look conspiratorial!

Especially Rebekah

Whoops, let’s roll back this story.  No, it wasn’t a bagel, I think it was French Toast.  We can imagine how easy it would be to create a small Mother’s Day surprise with a fresh bagel and some fresh juice or piping hot coffee.   But a special breakfast is only one way to appreciate mom, and I want to jump back to the present to talk about Mother’s Day 2023.

On this Mother’s Day I will be baking bagels. I am filled with gratitude for my daughter who continues to stand by me during a very dark period for us both— the passing of Miguel. in March of 2022. Since starting Sherry’s Bagels last year, Rebekah seamlessly supports me in so many ways.  Her enthusiasm, and her staunch belief in the yumminess of my bagels (check her Instagram), is truly a Mother’s Day gift for me  every day.

Locals passing on Solano, admiring and sampling the bagels…and then purchasing at the Pop-Up.

She and her community of friends consistently show up at Sherry’s Bagels monthly Pop-Ups at the Golden Hour on Solano Ave,  Rebekah brings energy, assistance and an infectious enthusiasm- not to mention coffee! She is engaged in this project of Sherry’s Bagels and I am sustained by her encouragement.

So at this stage of my life, every day is Mother’s Day, with or without a card, with or without flowers, and definitely with or without a bagel, especially knowing it would be a Sherry’s Bagel that I had baked at 6:00 a.m.

To all caregivers, whether you wear the label mother, or not- I hope you are appreciated on Sunday and everyday.
